Each year, prior to my R&R in coastal North Carolina, I ask my personal/ professional network for their current book recommendations. I seek books on coaching, leadership, and change, as well as "Fun Beach Reads." I review it all, consider what “Signals from The Universe” I have received, and then pick what will be in my beach bag. I share with you here the entire final list.
How to use this list:
First, scan the list. Notice what speaks to you the most. Pick a book or two, and dive in. If you are pressed for time, just read the list, and make THAT your summer reading. There’s enough here to give you an idea if you’ll enjoy a title – or at the very least, enough information to know what people are talking about when they ask, “have you read The Passage?!” In addition, when someone mentions Getting Naked you will know that it is a business fable from Patrick Lencioni versus a study of the adult entertainment industry.

Immediately following the title are a mini-description and/or Notes submitted by the person(s) who recommended the title.
[Jim’s Notes: My own comments, if any, are
in brackets.] I hope that you enjoy this year's
list. Have fun, and happy reading!
| Note to those who "don't have the time to read" or "don't like to read"
|
If you spend part of your vacation driving to your destination, why not use that time to start on your summer reading by popping in a CD or plugging in your iPod! Hint: my own and others’ experiences tell me that Fiction makes for the best audio travel experience. For example, I dearly love Jim Collins’ work, but Good to Great on audio is a real sleeper. Give me a plot to follow and a variety of “voices” and I can drive five hours at a pop!
There are now SO MANY ways to experience a book: hard cover, paperback, audio, e-text, on your Kindle or iPad, and you can view it online or on your smart phone. And… you can bring all of these versions to the beach. |

A Look Back
Occasionally books that I read in past years resurface among new readers who have just discovered them. This year it was Eat, Pray, Love. See my 2008 review on page 7.
Enjoy your Summer Reading! In Happiness, Jim
