Each year, prior to taking my two weeks of R&R in coastal
North Carolina, I put out a note asking my coaching/training/consulting
colleagues and clients for their current book recommendations.
I'm looking for serious – tomes on coaching, leadership, change,
and so on – as well as "frothy little beach books."
I look at all the submissions, consider what “signals from The
Universe” I’ve received, and then pick what will be in my beach
bag. I share with you here the entire final list.
How to use this list:
Scan
the list. Notice what emerges for you (look for signals from The
Universe!). Pick a book or two, and dive in. If you are pressed
for time, just read the list, and make THAT your summer reading.
There’s enough here to be able to hold your own at cocktail parties
and coffee shops – you won’t be able to discuss key plot points,
but at least you’ll have some idea what other people are talking
about when they ask, “Have you read Covey’s new book?!”
Immediately following the title are a mini-description and/or
any comments submitted by the person who recommended the title.
[Jim’s Notes: My own comments, if any, are
in brackets.] I hope that you enjoy this year's compiled
list. Have fun, and happy reading!
| Note: Audio indicator
DROPPED for 2008
|
If you spend part of your vacation driving
to the beach, why not use that time to start on your summer
reading by popping in a CD or plugging in your ipod!
For veterans of my list, note I’ve dropped the indicator
this year. There are now SO MANY ways to get a book that
I’m leaving the modality to you. You may purchase hard cover,
paperback, audio version for MP3 or iTunes, e-text online,
the Kindle
version (Amazon’s e-reader), view it on your PDA, or
have the book streamed to your cell phone!

A Retrospective
Every once in awhile a book that I read several years ago resurfaces.
This year it was two: The Life of Pi and Water for
Elephants. No fewer than FIVE people said of both books,
“Jim, you’ve got to read this book!” Been there, done that, and
highly recommend them both. Just for the heck of it, I reprint
at the END of this document my timeless reviews from my 2005 and
2007 lists. Enjoy!
