Coaching Works Wonders

Do you recognize yourself here? You may be a great candidate for coaching if you possess five or more of the following characteristics.

Coaching works wonders for people who are:

  1. Brilliant and Multi-Faceted
They are bright and creative people who understand complexity yet can find simplicity in complex situations. They are talented in diverse ways, and interested in working on many aspects of themselves. They are able—and WILLING—to see things from multiple perspectives.

  2. Savvy
They are well-read, informed, and current on what is going on in their part of the world, be it parenting, teaching, accounting, or leading, and they have a feel for what constitutes Best Practices (even tho they may not be doing it themselves, yet).

  3. Purposeful
Like the Conquistadors of old, they have pulled their ship to the shore, then burned it—they are committed to moving forward and recognize that their coach's role is to accelerate their progress, not initiate it.

  4. Responsible
They come to the relationship understanding that they alone are responsible to deliver results. They deliver on promises made to self and others. They take responsibility for their own actions and outcomes, and rarely place blame.

  5. Quick to process and commit
They are people you can "see" thinking. They process and examine concepts quickly, and are comfortable making commitments in the moment. Decisions may take time to consider, but they will still commit to writing, research, practice, experimentation, setting deadlines, and practice, practice, practice, so as to keep moving forward.

  6. Energized
They have a zest for life. Whether introverted or extraverted, they have deep wells of positive energy and they understand what drains them and what renews them (and if they don’t know, they are willing to “go there” to find out).

  7. Optimistic
They believe in the inherent goodness of people and that there is a positive perspective on any situation, even when that it not apparent. They are resilient and recover quickly from setbacks. They are self-healing.

  8. Willing to Explore
They will try a new restaurant, drive a different route, change a behavior, take a risk, or go deeper within. They seek ideas and suggestions, then act on them to learn what they can from the experience.

  9. Curious
They ask questions and seek to understand self and others better.

  10. Confessed Chocaholics (or procrastinators, or micro-managers, etc)
They willingly admit their "addictions" to both self and coach, and are ready to make the life-long commitment to change that may be required to improve their life and attain their goals.

  11. Comfortable with Self
They are willing to look in the mirror and acknowledge what's there -- and what's not. They acknowledge and celebrate their talents and their faults. Though they may be itching to shed it and proceed with metamorphosis, they are currently "comfortable in their own skin."

How’d you do? Can you say“yes” to five or more of these? Ready to commit to changing your life, becoming a fabulous leader, or increasing your happiness? Let’s talk!

By the way—this is MY checklist for Coachability. If you want a coach, yet you can’t check off five or more of the above, don’t despair. I can connect you with a good coach—it just probably won’t be me.
